Industry News IHRSA and EHFA establish working committee
December 21, 2007 · In a spirit of cooperation to grow the industry and clarify the roles of IHRSA and EHFA in the European health club industry, the two organisations have agreed to form a working group comprising two representatives from each organisation. Hans Muench and Alison O’Kane will represent IHRSA, and Herman Rutgers and Jean-Ann Marnoch will represent EHFA. The committee will meet in January, and hopes to make meaningful progress by the start of the annual IHRSA International Convention and Trade Show, which is being held 5-8 March.
In a joint statement, Michael Levy, IHRSA Chairman, and Harm Tegelaars, EHFA President, said: “We are experiencing a worldwide epidemic of obesity and a host of chronic and life-threatening diseases that could be eliminated or controlled through regular exercise. The health and fitness industry can and should play a pivotal role in improving the health of all Europeans. We are uniquely positioned to provide the public with the facilities and personal support they need to live longer, healthier and happier lives. "In order for the industry to take its rightful place in the healthcare sector, we must engage governments, the media, and the healthcare community at all levels – local, national, EU, and global. This is no small task and will require commitment, effort and action from all stakeholders in the industry to make this happen." The Euroepan health and fitness sector generates € 20 billion in revenues, employs 370,000 persons, and serves 40 million members in public and private health & fitness clubs across Europe. Based in Brussels, the European Health & Fitness Association (EHFA) with its origins in 1996 as a not-for-profit organisation, represents the interests of the European Health & Fitness sector at the EU level. Its objective is “More People, More Active, More Often". EHFA is also a standards setting body and promotes best practices in instruction and training in order to raise overall quality. IHRSA Releases “New & Improved” Financial Management Tool (FMT) for Health Club Operators December 10, 2007 · The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) announced today the release of the Financial Management Tool (FMT), a strategic resource for health clubs. The FMT is an Excel -based package that was originally developed in 2004 but has been updated this year to include 17 linked spreadsheets. The FMT can be easily customized to address a club’s specific business model and financial-management needs, which is set in IHRSA's Uniform Accounting System – the industry standard. “This tool is a great solution for club operators that are either developing a financial system or that want to improve their current systems,” said Phoebe Anderson, IHRSA’s Publications Coordinator. “The Financial Management Tool can save you hundreds of hours of time and effort plus the substantial cost it would take to start from scratch to develop an integrated system. Tracking and analyzing your finances within one system will efficiently lead your business to success, she said. When it comes to the financial management of your business, why reinvent the wheel?” Read Full Release • Request More Information More IHRSA Releases: November 21, 2007 · IHRSA Releases The 2007 Guide to Membership Retention: Industry Lessons on What– and What Not– to Do November 19, 2007 · Nearly 400 Attend 7th Annual IHRSA European Congress-Rasmus E.
