McCarthy started his career in the sports and fitness arena in 1958, when he was drafted by the New York Knicks basketball team. He went on to tour with the Harlem Globetrotters, playing for their opponents, the College All-Stars.
Later, in the 1960's and early 1970's, he was a basketball and tennis coach and a theology teacher at colleges in Minnesota and Massachusetts. McCarthy received his undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame. He holds masters degrees in philosophy, theology and business administration.
